Bonus Hacking 101: Because Bonus Whoring Is Old School!

Yes, I said it. Bonus whoring is old school. For those of you who aren’t familiar with bonus whoring, it’s basically taking advantage of poker and casino bonus offers. Bonus whores sign up at a site, play the minimum required to clear the bonus, cash out, and move on to the next victim.

But don’t you tell people that they SHOULD take advantage of gambling bonuses?

Yes, I do, but not the same way that bonus whores do. See, I too was at one time, a bonus whore *shameful look*. I’ve changed my philosophy somewhat since then and advocate a slightly different approach I call bonus hacking. So how is bonus hacking different from bonus whoring? I’ll explain that and more in the following article.

As a new player I learned quickly that one of the keys to becoming a successful gambler was proper bankroll management. I started looking for any article I could find on building a bankroll. That’s when I discovered bonus whoring.

That was back in 2004, when bonus whoring was in its prime. Now, things have changed significantly. Most of it has gotten worse as far as players are concerned. Bonuses have become much more difficult to clear, and gambling sites now make examples of bonus whores by banning them and/or confiscating their winnings.

A new approach is needed to ensure new players have a chance to build a nice sized gambling bankroll, and gambling sites aren’t completely ripped off. So that brings me to the first difference between bonus whoring and bonus hacking;

Bonus whoring is shortsighted, while bonus hacking is in the long-term interest of players and gambling sites.

My main purpose is to help you make money gambling. However, in order for online poker rooms, online casinos, and bingo sites to continue providing quality bonus offers, we have to consider their interests as well. If selfish players (me included) hadn’t abused the gambling sites for the past few years, everyone would still be reaping the rewards of great online gambling bonuses. So what is the answer?

Bonus Hacking Principle #1: Play more than required

When playing for a particular gambling bonus, ALWAYS play between 50-75% more than is required.

For example, if a poker site requires that you get 100 points to clear a $100 bonus, you should get between 150 - 175 points before trying to cash out any winnings. This way, the site will view you as a valuable player, and gladly offer you bonuses in the future to come back. At the same time, they won’t be as inclined to change the bonus requirements to make their offer more difficult to clear.

While there is a slight chance that you will lose some of your winnings in the process, there is also the same chance that you’ll win even more.

Bonus whoring focuses mainly on poker bonuses. There’s nothing wrong with that, I love poker bonuses. But there’s so much more money to be made from casinos, bingo sites, sportsbooks, and even rummy and spades sites. If Bonus Hacking Principle #1 was the bad news, here’s the good news.

Bonus Hacking Principle #2: Diversify your bonus portfolio

Just like with investing, diversification is key. By expanding the range of bonus offers you take advantage of, you will make thousands of dollars more over time. This weeks Gambling Q&A has to do with poker hand rankings. For new poker players, learning the poker hand rankings represents the first real hurdle to becoming a winning poker player. Here’s this week’s question.

I’m new to playing poker and would like to know more about the order of poker hands. How can I learn what beats what in poker?

That’s an excellent question and an important aspect of becoming a good poker player. When I was a new player, I remember being stumped on flushes and straights. I also thought that if two players had a flush, they automatically tie, which is far from the truth. It’s so important for you to commit to memory what beats what in poker or face being eaten by the poker sharks out there.

How to learn poker hand rankings in less than 24 hours

The best way to learn anything is by doing. The internet makes it so easy to master new skills quickly. There’s no excuse not to make use of the tools available to you. For learning poker hands, I suggest you download free poker software where you can play against real opponents for play money.

Players from the United States should download PokerStars or one of my other recommended US friendly internet poker rooms. Players from outside the US should download Party Poker. While you’re downloading, read this short guide and bookmark it for future reference.

1. Royal Flush - What it beats: EVERYTHING!
This is the best poker hand possible. A royal flush is basically an Ace-high straight flush. It consists of A-K-Q-J-10 all of the same suit.

2. Straight Flush - What it beats: Everything except a Royal
A straight flush beats everything except a Royal Flush. It consists of five cards of the same suit in sequence. This example shows a Seven-high Straight Flush.

3. Four-of-a-Kind - What it beats: Everything except a straight flush or royal flush
Also known as quads, four-of-a-kind consists of 4 cards of the same rank. This example shows Quad Jacks with an Ace kicker.

4. Full House - What it beats: A Flush, Straight, Three-of-a-Kind, Two Pair, or One Pair
Also called a full boat, a full house consists of three cards of the same rank and a pair of another. The strength of the full house is determined by the three-card grouping. This example shows Kings Full of Queens.

5. Flush - What it beats: Straight, Three-of-a-Kind, Two Pair, or One Pair
A flush consists of five non-consecutive cards of the same suit. The highest card in the flush makes its rank This example shows a King High Flush which could only be beaten by an Ace High Flush.

6. Straight - What it beats: Three-of-a-Kind, Two Pair, or One Pair
A straight is made with 5 cards in sequence. If more than one straight is present, the highest ranking straight will win. This example shows a Queen High Straight.

7. Three-of-a-kind - What it beats: Two Pair or One Pair
Three-of-a-kind, also called trips or a set, is comprised of three cards of the same rank. This example shows a Set of Threes with an Ace-King Kicker.

8. Two Pair - What it beats: One Pair
Two cards of the same rank paired with two other cards of the same rank make, two pair. The higher pair makes out the rank of the two pair. This example shows Aces and Jacks with a King Kicker.

9. One Pair - What it beats: Any lower pair or hands without a pair
A pair is simply two matching cards of a rank. This example shows a Pair of Queens with an Ace Kicker.

10. Understanding hands with no pair
If no one has a pair the winner is determined by the highest ranking card in each hand. For example, ace high beats king high, 10 high beat 8 high, etc.

A final word on kickers
If you’re new to poker, you shouldn’t start playing without understanding the importance of kickers. A kicker is an unpaired card that helps decide the winner if both players have the same pair. For example, in Texas Hold’em if you hold AJ and your opponent hold AQ on a board of A5339, you would lose with aces & threes with a jack kicker to your opponent’s aces and threes with a queen kicker. Kickers play a huge part in your success with community card games like Texas Hold’em. Don’t underestimate their value.

To sum it all up
Learning what beats what in poker is a fundamental necessity of becoming a winning poker player. The best way to learn is by playing poker online for free, before putting up your own money in a game. Kickers are a valuable part of community card poker, don’t underestimate them.

15 Poker Starting Hands Strategy for No Limit Texas Hold’em

The one thing I remember at the beginning of my poker-playing career was the need for guidelines. I wanted to know what the best starting poker hands were and how to play them. As time goes by, you’ll learn that there are many other factors that go into becoming a winning poker player. However, hand selection has to be the single most important factor in your list of skills to develop. If you’ve gotten past the first stage of learning how to play Texas Holdem, you are ready to start learning how to make money playing live or at internet poker rooms.

If you combine the strategy presented here with the available online poker gambling bonuses, you’ll have a money-making combination. This article applies to No Limit Texas Hold’em cash game (full table) hands only. Poker tournament hands and Fixed Limit Texas Hold’em hands will be covered another time.

Starting hands for No Limit Hold’em cash games

I suggest that, as a new player, you restrict your play to these 15 hands. All pocket pairs(13 total), AK, and AQ – that’s it!

Again, this hand selection strategy applies to a full table of 9-10 players. Short-handed (6-max) tables require a very different strategy. This group of hands is very limited, but they should keep you out of many tough spots. Restricting yourself to these hands only will allow you to a) make money or at least b) break even while trying to clear a poker bonus. Next, I’ll talk about how to play specific hands to make you the most money.

How to play the best Texas Hold’em starting hands

AA, KK, QQ, JJ, & 1010
If no one else has raised, you should raise all of these hands. A good rule of thumb for your raises is (4xBig Blind) +1 Big Blind for every limper. So, if you’re playing .05/.10 NL your standard raise would be $.20 (4 x .05). Just add .05 more per limper to punish them for limping. If there has been a raise before it’s your turn, reraise AA and KK and just call with QQ, JJ, and 1010. If there has been a raise and a big reraise in front of you, push all-in with AA and KK and fold everything else.

AK and AQ
Raise both of these if no one else has raised first. If there’s a raise in front of you, call with AK and fold AQ. AQ doesn’t play well in a raised pot so just muck it!

All other pairs 22-99 – Flop sets.. get paid
Limp or call a standard raise with all of these pairs. You don’t mind a standard sized raise because you are hoping to flop three-of-a-kind and win a huge pot. If you miss your set, be ready to fold if there’s any real action. This is your bread and butter in No Limit. Be patient, wait for your set, and get paid.

Yes, this a simple strategy, but it will make you money while you’re learning the ropes as a No Limit poker player. As you gain more of an understanding of betting patterns, position, stack size, etc, you’ll be able to expand your hand selection and become an even better poker player.

Quick and Dirty Texas Holdem Rules

Now that you’ve downloaded and installed Pokerstars, you’re ready to start playing Texas Holdem right?! Well, not exactly. First, I need to cover the most basic principles and Texas Holdem rules and then you will be ready to start practicing.

Before play begins there are two forced bets called the blinds. The player to the immediate left of the dealer is the small blind and the next player to the left is the big blind. The blinds are there to encourage action and rotate around the table with the dealer button.

Everyone gets two cards face down. There is a round of betting where you can raise, call, or fold. This is commonly referred to as preflop.

After all the preflop action is complete, three community cards are dealt in the middle of the table. This is known as the flop. Another round of betting takes place.

Then the fourth community card, called the turn, is dealt. More betting.

Finally, the fifth community card, called the river, is dealt. Last of the betting.

After the action on the river is complete, the remaining players will showdown their hands. You use one or two of your cards together with the community cards to make the best five-card hand.

The first two cards are your most important decision. Gamblers will say that any two cards can win, which is technically true. Position, position, position. Perhaps you’ve heard the old real estate adage “location, location, location” to describe the value of picking a certain property. In poker, it’s your position that determines a lot of your hands value. The dealer button is the last to act on the flop, turn, and river. So it’s the most valuable position in Texas Holdem. The reason position is so vital is that you get to see what everyone else does before you act, giving you the chance to maximize your profits. If everyone checks, you might want to bluff at the pot by betting with a bad hand. You can also make plays like raising another player to isolate and for value.

Flop it or fold it. The flop (first three community cards) represents 71% of the hand. So it’s vital that you flop a good hand or a strong draw to continue. No matter how good your first two cards look, if you don’t hit the flop and there’s action, you need to fold. Many new players (myself included) lose (or sometimes win) very quickly because they call too much.
